The Electric Prunes ~ I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)

I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night) {IHTMTD} is the most known and successful track from American psych-pop band The Electric Prunes. I recently did a shootout between the original Reprise 45 (pictured below, which is my 45 copy), the stereo remaster cd issue off the Electric Prunes album, and finally the mono mix off of the Nuggets From Nuggets cd from Rhino Records. This really isn’t a fair shootout, the original 45 with the blazing hot mono single mix is the clear winner. The track just punches you straight in the gut with its fierce low end and power, which most 45’s from the 60’s brought. 2nd in the shootout goes the mono version off of the Nuggets from Nuggets album. The clean mono sound is present and the mix is very good, my guess it holds true to the form of the mono album mix. Finally, the stereo version from the Prunes debut album, which is not bad in its own right. The stereo mix is done very well but the power is just not there, if this track was even played on the radio these days I assume this is the version that would be heard. Unfortunately, IHTMTD is going to turn into a lost nugget, as it does not fit what the least common dominator is listening to on commercial radio these days. Oldies radio is all but dead and IHTMTD does not fit into the typical classic rock genre. Thank to YouTube user WABCRADIO77 for this video!
